A CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan is an advanced 3D dental X-ray that captures detailed volumetric images of teeth, jawbone, nerves, sinuses, and soft tissues in a single rotation. Yes, CBCT scanning at Envision Denta is safe. We follow AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board) guidelines and apply the ALARA principle — As Low As Reasonably Achievable. Our modern low-dose CBCT system delivers a radiation dose significantly lower than a medical CT scan, and comparable to a few days of natural background radiation. Our MDS-qualified oral radiologists select the smallest suitable field of view and lowest dose setting for every patient. Children and patients with radiation sensitivity concerns are assessed individually before scanning.

An OPG (Orthopantomogram) is a 2D panoramic dental X-ray that provides a flat overview of the entire upper and lower jaw, all teeth, and surrounding bone. It is ideal for general dental screening, orthodontic evaluation, and wisdom tooth assessment. A CBCT scan produces a 3D volumetric dataset, revealing bone quality, nerve canal position, and precise anatomical detail that OPG cannot show. For dental implant planning, complex oral surgery, or TMJ assessment, your dentist will typically request a CBCT. For routine checks, OPG is usually sufficient. At both Envision Denta centres — Kasba and Behala — both scans are available.

Most dental imaging procedures at Envision Denta are quick and comfortable. An OPG panoramic scan takes approximately 15 seconds of scan time — the full appointment is usually under 10 minutes. A CBCT scan takes 20–40 seconds of actual scanning time; the full appointment, including positioning and preparation, is typically under 20 minutes. Your digital report is prepared by our MDS oral radiologist the same day in most cases, and shared via secure digital download. This applies to both our Kasba and Behala centres.

We recommend booking an appointment in advance to reduce waiting time, though we accommodate walk-in patients where possible. Please bring your dentist's referral prescription, any previous scans or X-rays, and a valid photo ID. No special preparation is usually needed for CBCT or OPG scans. For dental implant planning, CBCT is strongly preferred over OPG. While an OPG gives a useful 2D overview, it cannot show bone depth, width, or the precise position of the inferior alveolar nerve in three dimensions. Routine dental X-rays and CBCT scans are generally avoided during pregnancy unless clinically essential, as a precautionary measure. For children, CBCT is only recommended when the diagnostic benefit clearly outweighs the radiation exposure — our MDS radiologists follow strict paediatric dose guidelines.
